Acid Reflux although it seems to be a common problem can also lead to more serious medical conditions requiring hospitalization and even surgery. Proper care should be taken regarding the disease.

There are various drugs that can be taken as a relief to such a situation, one of the most common drugs is Histamine Receptor Antagonists, and this type of drug actually works as it decreases the amount of acid the stomach produces. It gives a relief in conditions where the stomach produces excessive acids and the acid comes up into esophagus. A histamine antagonist is one of the most effective drugs, as it stimulates acid production released within the stomach wall. Histamine Antagonists work by blocking the receptors of histamine. This in turn prevents histamine from stimulating the cells that produce acid in the stomach.

Another common medicine used for Acid Reflux treatment is antacids. Antacids are actually neutralizers and thus neutralize acid when coming in contact with acids within the stomach. The best way to take antacid is about one hour after meals or just before you think there will be symptoms of Acid Reflex. The food from the meal slows the emptying of stomach and thus the antacid stays in the stomach for a longer period of time. A second dose of antacid should be taken about two hours after having a meal. Antacids can be aluminum, magnesium or calcium based.

Promotability Agents are also used as an effective medicine in providing relief to patients of Acid Reflux. They speed up the digestion and prevent acid from staying in the stomach for a longer time.

Proton Pump Inhibitors are a group of medicines that can be taken with prescription from a competent medical advisor. Also the antacid in the foam neutralizes the acid, which comes in contact with the foam.

Some times Acid Reflux reaches to a level that is incurable by mere administration of drugs, in these cases surgery is needed in the treatment of Acid Reflux. Fundoplication is a surgical procedure and is the effective acid reflux treatment. In this surgery any hiatal hernical sac is pulled below the diaphragm and stitched there. The opening in the diaphragm through which the esophagus passes is tightened around esophagus. Also the upper part of the stomach is wrapped around lower esophagus to make esophageal sphincter artificially. This surgery provides excellent relief to the patients of Acid Reflux for about five to ten years.

Another way of treating Acid Reflux is the endoscopic technique. Endoscopy also involves tightening the esophageal sphincter. Radio frequency waves are also used to treat Acid Reflux. The radio frequency waves cause scarring beneath the esophageal lining as the tissues get damaged. When the scar shrinks it pulls the surrounding tissues and thus tightens the sphincter and the area above it. Endoscopy is also carried out by injecting a material into the esophageal wall in the area of LES.

One the best treatments of Acid Reflux is changing of your eating habits. Poor eating habits often lead to Acid Reflux. One should take smaller and earlier evening meals which reduce the problem of Acid Reflux to a great extent. Also one should elevate the upper body when in bed. This elevation raises the esophagus above the stomach and partially restores the gravity, which in turn reduces the problems of Acid Reflux.

Affecting the Throat

The acidic juices that are pushed back into the esophagus from the stomach cause acid reflux throat. The affected person’s throat is irritated by the presence of acid contained in the partially digested food regurgitated from stomach. Persistent reflux of acid can cause back of the throat or pharyngeal symptoms leading to sore throat and voice problems. Such laryngo-pharyngeal symptoms, unlike the typical heartburn associated with GERD that a person can easily identify with, may catch the victim unawares and are therefore known as silent or atypical reflux.

Symptoms

Symptoms of acid reflux throat include accumulation of excessive phlegm or mucous in the throat inducing frequent throat clearing leading to hoarse or sore throat, feeling a lump in the throat, a sensation of choking and wheezing. There remains a lingering sensation in the throat of a coating or stuck food. The problem is particularly pronounced in the morning. The voice does not remain natural and sounds sluggish. For persons severely affected with acid reflux throat, there can be incidences of pneumonia or ulcer of the larynx. This results as a consequence of injury to the esophagus caused by the partially digested acid juice. If the reflux continues untreated for long, it can even cause esophageal or throat cancer. The longer the disease persists, the more is the scarring of the vocal fold. Irritable and crying children may indicate their suffering from acid reflux throat that causes them respiratory disorders, swallowing difficulties, choking, pneumonia and asthma.

Things to Avoid

The throat and the vocal folds affected by acidity require continued treatment to heal. The acid reflux throat symptoms get aggravated by throat lozenges and cough drops containing eucalyptus oil and menthol as they besides causing throat irritation stimulate the stomach to secrete more acid. Other things that can aggravate the situation include mouthwashes, breath fresheners, gums and hard candies.

Acid reflux.
Coming out of acid reflux. My story may be able to help some of you.
They say that acid reflux is caused by poor eating habits and or bacteria in your stomach.
Right before my episode with acid reflux I was eating healthy, in perfect shape and had my perfect work hard.

Once day, I stared having all the symptom of acid reflux and no one knew what I had. This went on for months. I forced my doctor to check for Helicobacter pylori. which I ended up testing positive.

I got omeprazole (Prilosex) plus 2 antibiotics. 4 pills a day for 14 days.
After the treatment my stomach was hitching and I still had a hard time eating. I was still creating too much acid so my doctor give me again omeprazole (Prilosex). I refused to be on any drug and I knew that the omeprazole (Prilosex) was not the answer it was just a bandage without dealing with the root of the problem.

This is what I did:
I knew the Key out of this was: I need to keep the body alkaline, the bad bacteria don’t like an alkaline environment.
I stop take the omeprazole (Prilosex) and starting taking a of Jarro Dophilus EPS (can find it in health store). The 3rd day I started to feel the difference. I was able to eat more verity of food.
Aloe vera juice before every meal
Eating every 3 hrs small meal. No row vegetable – fresh steam vegetable only and protein. No oily or greasy food at all, not black chocolate , not alcohol, no caffeine, no soda and not spices in your food. Avoid hot water, somehow my system does quite down with colder drink and food.
I eat protein and green 3 time a day and a lot of low fat low sugar organic yogurt as snack and all day.
I take 4 pills a day of Jarro Dophilus EPS . One pill 45 min before every meal to help my stomach and intestines get their natural bacteria back while controlling the excess of acid the stomach is creating. Drink the pills with hot water It makes swallowing the pills easier.
I drink Apple Cider Vinegar (2 table spoons in 0.5l drink of water) throughout the day with a lot of water.
I don’t mix the protein & green vegetable with fruits.
Sugar create more acid so I am very careful with the fruits I eat (low sugar index fruits only) and I don’t eat any carbohydrate for the same reason.
I recommend: Cranberry juice-Prune juice (the sugar free type mix with H2O)
2 tea spoons of honey mix with water before eating.
Avocado-apples-banana-melon-walnuts-almonds-tofu-sweet potato-fish-Grilled chicken (legs grilled) easier on your stomach. Not red meat at the beginning it is too hard on the stomach. Camomile tea help digestion process.
Stop eating 3hrs before bedtime. I sleep with your upper body higher than the bed level almost in a semi sitting position.
I don’t lift weight or jog because I was creating too much acid and it was giving me some palpitation. (yes, the doctor said that the palpitation have nothing to do with acid reflux-there not connected-well doctor have news for you everything is connected and how can a super athlete with no hard problem get some palpitation every time his stomach create too much acid).
To avoid the palpitation, I ride my bike slowly without too much effort, and also walk. I make sure I space out my workout throughout the day.
Now I am getting better and I know you can be acid reflux free..it take time and patience.
I am almost certain that a lot of us will test negative for every test on the planet regarding stomach bacteria but small bacteria such as Escherichia coli-E-coli and other don’t really have a test for them and you could have something in your system putting your stomach out of balance. So fight back by drinking Apple Cider Vinegar to clean your system and work on increasing the growth of the good bacteria your body need. Mediation is a must in the healing process

Hi there!
I am a female teen suffering from what the GI believes is acid reflux. Prevacid helps a little but not too much. What other treatment could be available? I am waiting to get test results back and am also having a few more tests done tomorrow. This morning I woke up with a dry cough and and scratchy throat as if I have been screaming for a while but I havent been screaming. What does this mean? Also, there is a stomach bug going around, what are the chances of me getting it? Please answer the following questions:
~What are other treatment options if Prevacid isn’t working?(I am a female teen)
~What is this throat and dry cough sitaution for…like a cold or could it be part of acid reflux?
~Does this sound like acid reflux?
~If blood work and barium x rays come back negative, what other tests are there?
~How much longer do I have with this(i have had this for a month and a half)?
~When does surgery as treatment come in?

PS- Any other teens sufforing with acid reflux? Any suggestions or stories?

And also, I ate salsa with chips last night with soda for dinner and I was reallly sick. The symptoms are worse?!
