Acid Reflux really bad should I see a docotor?

I have told my mom but she doesnt understand how bad it is. She told me it runs in our family and her dad had it. I think I should see a doctor, mostly because I have heard about people getting cancer from acid reflux and it has been going on for years and I usually just take some petobismol. But it has become very uncomfortable to live with and the petobismol doesnt work anymore.
Should I see a doctor.?

I don’t know how old you are, so you may need to discuss this with your parents, but there are many over the counter medications (prilosec, prevacid, etc.) that you take daily for acid reflux that can cure the problem. However, you have to take them everyday for a while to see the difference. It is possible to be at an increased risk for esophageal cancer from prolonged, severe reflux, but it takes years. It would definitely be okay to see a doctor, although many would have you try the over counter meds first. Good luck.

How to best relieve symptoms of acid reflux involves making lifestyle changes such as avoiding certain foods, losing weight, stopping smoking and exercising regularly. A wide variety of over-the-counter medications such as antacids, anti-gas or ant-flatulence drugs, oral suspension and H-2 receptor blockers are available to provide temporary relief.
Avoid the overuse of over-the-counter medications as they may cause side effects such as constipation and diarrhea. For more frequent and severe episodes of acid reflux, your doctor may prescribe medications such as proton pump inhibitors. If lifestyle changes and prescription medications fail to offer improvement, surgery may be recommended.
